I, like many others, have wanted to be a writer for a long time. I remember being in high school and writing short stories that amused and/or depressed my friends and English teacher. There weren’t many of them… at the time, I was convinced I would become a singer/actress.
Fast forward to five years ago (give or take). The desire to write lies within me like a little ember, just waiting for a breath, a puff of air to kindle it into a flame. I spoke with a few people about it, and they encouraged me to write. But every time I thought about it seriously, I thought, there are so many words in a book! How could I ever organize that many words into a book?
Then, one fine day, I had a thought: I’ll just write a paragraph… and then a few more. If that goes well, I’ll keep writing paragraphs and I’ll see if I can make a chapter. If I can make a chapter, then I can probably just keep doing that until it becomes a book.
And it worked.
I want to encourage others who have that little ember, that piece of creative burning that yearns to come out and be heard, be read. Do it. Just start. And if you get a few chapters into it, keep going! Don’t stop. You might surprise yourself. Hell, you’ll probably surprise a lot of other people… but maybe not the ones that really know you.
Get a pen and some paper. Go to your computer. Whatever your medium is, get it. And just start.
